(b. 1968) is a Cuban-born artist working in Chicago.
She graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She works in the media of installation, video and performance art and examines the relationship between art, politics and life. Her works often touch on the topic of power and control. Tania Bruguera received the Prince Claus Award in 2008 and was nominated a finalist for the Ordway Prize in 2009. A professor at the University of Chicago, she had her exhibitions held at prominent institutions all over the world (Kunst Werke, Berlin, 2010; Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, 2005; Museum fur Modern Kunst, Frankfurt, 2003; Pratt Intitute, New York, 2002; San Francisco Art Institute, 2002; Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 1995). She also participated in the 49th, 51st and 53rd edition of the Venice Biennale.
Tania Bruguera’s special project in the framework of “Auditorium Moscow” is the performative “Trust Workshop,” in the course of which a former officer of the Soviet secret services will meet with ordinary people who have come to discuss their personal problems with him. The project is dedicated to the problem of trust in the post-Soviet world. According to its concept, it will be realized in Moscow, but never shown there.
The project is realized as part of the International Cultural Programme of the Polish EU Presidency coordinated by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
